How Does a Water Softener Work?

Water softeners work through a process called ion exchange . First, hard water enters the softener. While it enters the tank, it passes through a bed of  beads. These beads, also known as resin, are charged with sodium. The beads have a negative charge. The hard water minerals have a positive charge. As the hard water passes through the resin, the beads grab a hold of the minerals and remove them from the water. Last, the water exits the water softener back into your plumbing and throughout your home.

What is a Water Softener Doing During Regeneration?

Regeneration is the process of removing the hard water minerals from the beads in the softener. This is done by pulling brine water from the brine tank into your water softener. First, your system will flush your softener tank. After that process, it will draw brine water. This is the most important stage in a water softeners regen. The third step in regeneration, your system will do a rinse cycle. Rapid rinse will remove the extra sodium from the tank and water. Lastly, the system will do a Brine Fill, this is where your brine tank will refill with water to make a new brine solution.
